Delhi, India`s capital territory, is a massive metropolitan area in the country`s north. In Old Delhi, a neighborhood dating to the 1600s, stands the imposing Mughal-era Red Fort, a symbol of India, and the sprawling Jama Masjid mosque, whose courtyard accommodates 25,000 people. Nearby is Chandni Chowk, a vibrant bazaar filled with food carts, sweets shops and spice stalls. There are numerous tourist attractions in Delhi, both historic and modern Delhi is a city where time travel is feasible. Step aboard your time machine (the sleek and efficient metro) and you can go from Old Delhi, where labourers haul sacks of spices and jewellers weigh gold on dusty scales, to modern New Delhi, with its colonial-era parliament buildings and penchant for high tea. Then on to the future: Gurgaon, a satellite city of skyscraping offices and glitzy malls.

The Rajpath, a formal boulevard in the New Delhi government district, connects the India Gate war memorial and the massive presidential palace Rashtrapati Bhavan. Other significant sites include Lodi Gardens, a park featuring monumental tombs and acres of greenery; Mughal emperor Humayun`s tomb, a precursor of the Taj Mahal; Qutub Minar, a medieval brick minaret; and the flower-shaped Lotus Temple, a Bahá`í house of worship. Delhi also has a strong nightclub scene as well as many prominent museums, including ones dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, leaders of Indian independence.

Bengaluru (also called Bangalore) is the southern Karnataka state of India. The center of India`s high-tech industry, the city is also known for its parks and nightlife.

Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the West Bengal state of India. Founded as an East India Company trading post, it was India`s capital under the British Raj from 1773–1911.

Chennai, on the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is home to Fort St. George, built in 1644 and now a museum showcasing the city`s roots.

Hyderabad is the Telangana state of southern India. A major center for the technology industry, it`s home to many upscale restaurants and shops.

Pune is a sprawling city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It was once the base of the Peshwas (prime ministers) of the Maratha Empire, which lasted from 1674 to 1818.

Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is a densely populated city on India in west coast. A financial center, it`s India`s largest city. On the Mumbai Harbour waterfront stands the iconic Gateway of India.
